Flaunting (NZ) leads home Karaka trifecta in Castletown
02 June 2019
Graduates of the Karaka 2018 Sale finished first, second and third in Saturday’s $50,000 Listed John Turkington Forestry Ltd Castletown Stakes (1200m) at Wanganui, headed by the talented and gutsy filly Flaunting (NZ) (Showcasing).
Bought for $40,000 during the Book 2 session of last year’s Sale, the lightly raced Flaunting boosted her earnings to $49,500 on Saturday – along with a valuable first piece of black-type for her pedigree page.Runner-up She’s A Lady (NZ) (Swiss Ace) was passed in during the Book 3 session with a $12,000 reserve. She has now earned $33,410 in prize-money. Third-placed Jager Bombed (NZ) (Charm Spirit) cost $20,000 in Book 1 and has earned $14,275 in his five starts to date.Flaunting won and placed in her first two starts then was unplaced against a stellar field in the $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m).
After warming up with a trial win on May 14, Saturday was her return to racing action.Ridden by Sam Spratt for Te Rapa trainer David Greene, Flaunting eased back to the tail of the field after the first 200 metres of the race.Spratt waited until the home straight to make her move, then weaved her way through the field and surged into contention alongside She’s A Lady and Jager Bombed. In an exciting three-way finish, Flaunting proved strongest of all and beat She’s A Lady by a long head. Jager Bombed was another head away in third place.
“It was a really tough win,” Greene said. “She had to go back and then pick a path through. But Sammy (Spratt) is so good at doing that, and horses just keep going for her. I thought that was a very gutsy win today.“We’ll probably tick her over now and then have a crack at the (Listed) Ryder Stakes (1200m) at the end of July.

It's been a busy few months at Greene Racing with lots of racing action and more recently the new yearlings joining the barn for some education.
DAMA ZORRO was undoubtedly one of our headline acts for the season winning 3 races and running 2nd in 3 more. As a mare that always gets back in her races it was pleasing to see her be able to finish over the top of her rivals off both a slow and fast speed, and with some impressive sectionals to boot! She has headed to the paddock now for a winter rest and we already can't wait for her next season.
Not to be outdone stablemate, JUSTAMAIZ also clocked up 3 wins and multiple first 4 placings through his 18/19 season. Winning fresh up over 1400m in September 2018 the Guillotine gelding was still in winning form when victorious over 2200m in April 2019. He was ultra consistant all season, putting in honest efforts every time to the races. He too has gone for a well deserved spell and will be back for another big campaign in the spring. These two horses were responsible for a few great nights and sore heads for sure!!
The yearlings have started to come into the stables now after finishing their time at the breakers. They do a week in with us to learn the tracks and treadmill and then have a holiday before returning a month later. Tavistock x Songbird (1/2 sister to Stolen Dance) was first to arrive and set the bar high with impeccable behaviour. (Her 1/2 brother by Alamosa is also in full work with us and is impressing with his abilily and manners too).
Our two fillies syndicate girls TEOFILO x SANTANGELO and CHARM SPIRIT x BLACK BEAUTY also had great reports from the breakers and didn't disappoint when they arrived. The Teofilo has grown so much and is such an exciting prospect with her outstanding breeding and physical presence to match. The Charm Spirit looks every inch a 2yr at this stage and is a very confident and forward thinking filly. One 5% share remains in this syndicate!
Karaka colt purchases, SHAMEXPRESS x TIME FOR A KIP and REDWOOD x LYCHEE will enter the barn tomorrow. They have both been gelded and have breezed through their breaking faultlessly. The stallion Redwood has been leaving winners left, right and centre and our fellow will hopefully follow suit, looking at this stage like a fantastic 3yr staying type. Derby anyone?!
The SHAMEXPRESS x TIME FOR A KIP seems to catch everyone's attention when they see him in the flesh. He never seems to have a 'bad hair day' always looking ready to parade in good order and it will be great to have him in at the stables. Surprisingly there are a few shares left and both boys are available for viewing next week. For more info visit https://www.greeneracing.co.nz...
One to watch with the wetter months coming up is definitely FLAUNTING. This Showcasing filly had 3 starts as a summer 2yr. She ran 2nd to top colt Yourdeal first up, won her next one before attempting the Karaka Millions race finishing well back after it all went wrong for her. She has come back bigger and stronger and will relish slower track conditions that are on the way.
